I’m Just a Parrot on a stage,” This Saskatchewan born singer songwriter forces from his tobacco torn throat, “Saying all I know.” At only 20 years old, Sean Craib-Petkau has done more than most young musicians hope to do by his age. He’s self recorded, produced, and released four albums in two years and has toured from Coast to Coast and almost everywhere in between. He’s been described as “essential modern folk” and “well worth seeking out”. With another full length album planned to be recorded in early 2011 it seems this young prairie hopeful will be hard to stop in the coming years. “I’m going to take my time with this next release. Make sure everything is perfect. Hopefully it’ll be the one that helps me break out into the ‘hurricane sea’ that is Canadian music.”

Archipelago Vol. 1 is a collection of ambient, spacey, occasionally noisy and mostly instrumental pieces of music ranging from the semi-improvised, to rigidly followed classical scores. It’s not really a ‘proper’ follow up to the first album – that will come soon – but (hopefully) the first in a series of diversions that will collect various bits and pieces that I feel are too good to languish on my hard drive. Recorded in bits over the last few years and in various places.

released 08 March 2011
Written and performed by Ratatosk, except Spiegel im Spiegel which was composed by Arvo Part.

“Above all things to mention about Kiehne is his songwriting, which can be described as a moment where everything comes together effortlessly as if cut by nature itself, the result of which is awesome in the true sense of the word. Add this to the choir of friends singing perfectly matched harmonies on top of Kiehne’s cutting, emotive vocals and the result might very well give you the chills. Chris Kiehne is a name to pay close attention to.”

The title is Some Kind of Cure, and like the titles of my last album Strange Light or even my first two: The Confluence and After the Wrecking Ships, the phrase for me is meant to find hope through struggle. Much of this music, much of all of my music, deals at some level with the concept of cures, of what allows us to find light and hope in a world that isn’t always light and hopeful. Writing and recording these songs did that for me, and I hope that listening to them does that for you.

The Swedish experimental pop outfit Fredrik grew out a collaboration between multi-instrumentalist Fredrik and singer Lindefelt, both of whom also worked together in an indie electronic duo named the LK. As Fredrik, they carved out a genre-bending sound that reflected its influences, a myriad blend of ’60s and ’70s scenemakers like Bo Hansson and Fairport Convention, as well as more contemporary envelope pushers such as Jim O’Rourke and Maja Ratkje. The group’s atmospheric debut, Na Na Ni, was released on Kora Records.

King Creosote is the pen and stage name of Kenny Anderson, a Scottish singer-songwriter who, since 1995, has recorded and self-released over 40 full-lengths on his own remote-but-remarkable Fence imprint. At the very least, that’s an average of just under three per year, a number that, if other solo recording maniacs (Bob Pollard being a good example) are to serve as helpful guideposts, might lead one to assume that Anderson isn’t much for self-editing. But having helped co-release a small handful of Anderson’s records over the past eight years, Domino has volunteered to cull the Fife-native’s catalogue for Thrawn, a collection of King Creosote favorites that also serves as a compelling introduction for American listeners.
