Ofer Peled is a performer and composer in the field of ethnic jazz in Israel. In his new project “Ararat”, Peled and his ensemble of musicians combine Arabic, Turkish, Gypsy, African, Yemenite and Indian music with modern jazz and original compositions. Peled traveled throughout the world and studied many diverse musical styles, concentrating in recent years on polishing his unique style that has been influenced by all he learned and played on his travels.
In this performance, the musicians of “Ararat” will play a wide variety of instruments, some of which are characteristic of jazz, and others which are traditional ethnic instruments. This combination creates an enjoyable international encounter between East and West, North and South.

JuJu is Justin Adams (electric guitar, bendir, backing vocals), Juldeh Camara (lead vocals, ritti, talking drum), Billy Fuller (bass) and Dave Smith (drums, percussion). Their new album ‘In Trance’ has been recorded live to capture the spirit of JuJu’s electric performances on stage – channelling trancey rhythms from traditional Africa, leftfield jazz and the wilder end of rock. The enthusiastic reaction to their live work outs have now been reflected in outstanding reviews of this new album.

Hindi Zahra (born 1979 in Khouribga, Morocco) is a Franco-Moroccan singer. She has a Moroccan mother and a French father. Her songs are mostly in English but some lyrics are in the Berber language. Hindi Zahra’s sensual vocals and intriguingly varied roots may carry just enough mystery and allure to unlock the elusive twin holy grails of crossover appeal and credibility.  Chunky gypsy guitar rhythms undercut several of the tracks while Zahra sashays elegantly through the bluesy side of jazz interspersed with occasional excursions into a darker terrain. It well exhibits myriad colourful influences, from Moroccan folk songs to New York jazz bars.

This album is a live recording of a meeting in Cagliari in May 2010 between Macedonia’s funkiest brass orchestra and a highly-trained young pianist/composer, a native of Cagliari, Romeo Scaccia. The meeting of pianist Romeo Scaccia with the Kocani Orkestar is one of the most unusual and exciting moments in the contemporary music scene. Scaccia is able to absorb elements of jazz, tango, and the best of pop and to integrate these with the ethnic tradition of Kocani Orkestar with an extraordinary naturalness. Kocani and Scaccia appear to be exploring new, previously unheard musical territory. A process that here emerges in all its splendor and brilliance, giving us sounds, colors, and songs unlike anything we have ever listened to before.

Night Rider is the second release by jazz saxophonist Ilhan Ersahin’s Istanbul Sessions project, and the album features the same core group that performed on the debut. Ersahin, who’s of Swedish and Turkish descent, is backed by three Turkish musicians: bassist Alp Ersonmez, percussionist Izzet Kizil, and drummer Turgut Alp Bekoglu. The saxophonist has played with several jazz artists, including George Cables, Eddie Henderson, and Wallace Roney, but this band’s music leans toward funk, rock, and Turkish stylings. Ersahin uses electronic effects on his horn at times, creating a vibe that evokes Eddie Harris’ late-‘60s electric sax recordings. The distorted horn and other elements also imbue the album with a quality recalling late-period Miles Davis.

With “Give In To Love” birdpaula recomposes the puzzle of her singular and fertile life with an ever-varied musical score always suited to the expression of her true and profound identity: that of a multi-faceted artist in love with freedom. This independence becomes the lever of the catchy songs on the album – as in the cheeky impudence of “Bird Will Fly”, recalling Nancy Sinatra in her heyday.

Misery may love company but the reverse is true as well. And few improv-y crews are as adept at coaxing delicious smoky noir heartbreak as City Terrace quartet Low Light  Situations. It only takes a couple turtlenecks, two  beards, three folding chairs, one clarinet, and a single
sizzle-chain for these itinerant east LA session players to slow-roast a setÆs worth of mesmerizing instrumental reverb chamber mystery-jazz.
