Swiss Cajun and Zydeco enthusiasts, Mama Rosin, team up with London rockabilly veterans Hipbone Slim and the Knee Tremblers for a cheerful European treatment of classic Americana styles. Mama Rosin have always treated the dance music of the southern states with a rough- and-ready punk approach, mixing rock influences with styles that have their origins in the era of French colonialism and slavery in Louisiana. The Hipbone Slim trio have much the same garage-band attitude. The two bands fuse easily together here, the result is a set that constantly switches styles, from cajun and swamp blues to rockabilly. They’ll sound even better live.

Yehudah Poliker, twenty five years after his smash breakthrough debut album Einayim Sheli, which created the first fusion ever between Greek folk and Israeli rock, Yehuda Poliker comes full circle with his latest album Kol Davar Mazkir Li. The new album is made up of songs with lyrics written by Poliker himself to melodies composed by some of Greece’s top musicians. In a surprisingly touching move, Poliker opens the album singing the title track in Greek, and closes with it in Hebrew.

Shin’s story is a hash of half-familiar myths: He started out entertaining at a U.S. Army base, dropped acid, introduced socially conservative South Korea to psych rock, suffered state censure. His music is also a hodgepodge: square sax-rock, Motown, bongo-heavy folk ballads, and sunshine pop, all tinted by Shin’s guitar, which is alternately savage and buttoned-up. Interestingly, there’s a purity of Western influence atypical of most non-Western comps — fewer traces of folk tradition, fewer happy misunderstandings of the source material.

JuJu is Justin Adams (electric guitar, bendir, backing vocals), Juldeh Camara (lead vocals, ritti, talking drum), Billy Fuller (bass) and Dave Smith (drums, percussion). Their new album ‘In Trance’ has been recorded live to capture the spirit of JuJu’s electric performances on stage – channelling trancey rhythms from traditional Africa, leftfield jazz and the wilder end of rock. The enthusiastic reaction to their live work outs have now been reflected in outstanding reviews of this new album.

Even though the trio of Finnish indie veterans named their tenth studio album after the 1980s cult sports car (that was never manufactured in lime green, only ever in metallic color), it doesn’t bow down to the ‘80s or other decades, just to itself. The 31-year-old 22-Pistepirkko’s previous album (Well You Know) Stuff Is Like We Yeah was a disappointment to many fans, but now the band has put things right. The album has more to offer both those who love the wistful and cosmically pop Pistepirkko and those who are more into the garage rock style. Lights By The Highway, Sunny Days and Sweet Rodeo Heart are classic Pistepirkko tunes – and best of all, fresher than in years!

10 Tracks featuring Vic Ruggiero, Maddie Ruthless, Fanfara Kalashnikov and one of the last and best relases by ARI UP… and more!

Album Notes
One evening toward the end of summer, I crossed the street and barely got into the Whatevski PO Box before they shut the front door for the night. I keyed open the mail door with scattered interest and next thing I was unjamming a little box from the opening. Inside the little container were two identical CDs well marked “Vic Stuff.” I won’t spoil any more surprises, so just get this soon to be classic now.

The Main Street Gospel is a Columbus, Ohio trio who mix psych-infused classic rock with dusty country vibes and dirt-stained blues. The band was born in 2005, when Barry Dean–former tambourine shaker for the Brian Jonestown Massacre–began writing songs with longtime friend Ryan “Tito” Ida. Adam Scoppa joined the band on drums the following year.

Dean grew up around music, as his grandfather was a touring and recording guitarist for acts like Roy Rogers & The Sons of the Pioneers and The Georgia Crackers. It’s safe to say that passion for country music was passed on to his grandson. Tito grew up listening to Hank Williams and Bob Dylan and also paved his musical path early on. Scoppa takes his back beat cues from vintage Chicago blues and ’60s garage.

Together, the band has a strong sense of understanding and respect for the true roots of rock n’roll. Their sound recalls elements of folk giants The Byrds and Neil Young, while at the same time retaining the modern aesthetics of revivalists like Spacemen 3 and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
